Jain Biodata Format for Marriage
A Jain marriage biodata uses the standard one-page, six-section format and adds a short religious section: sect (Shwetambar or Digambar), community, gotra and diet. Horoscope details are optional — many Jain families don't match kundalis, so include them only if yours does. It often opens with ॥ जय जिनेन्द्र ॥.
What goes in the religious section of a Jain biodata?
| Field | Example | Why families check it |
|---|---|---|
| Sect | Shwetambar Murtipujak · Sthanakvasi · Terapanthi · Digambar | Many families prefer a match within the same sect, or at least ask |
| Community | Oswal, Porwal, Agrawal, Khandelwal, Shrimal… | Often the second thing read after the name |
| Gotra | Your gotra, and the mother's (nanihal) gotra | Many communities avoid matching the same gotra on either side |
| Diet | Jain — no onion, garlic or root vegetables | Day-to-day compatibility; be exact |
| Practice (optional) | Observes Paryushan fasts; avoids eating after sunset | Saves a question on the first call |
Sub-traditions and community names vary by region, and some families don't use them at all. Write only what your family actually goes by.
Do you need horoscope details?
Only if your family matches horoscopes. Some Jain families — especially in Rajasthan and Gujarat — do ask for date, time and place of birth; many others never look at a kundali. If you include it, copy the time of birth from the family records exactly, as explained on the Hindu biodata format page. If you don't, delete the section rather than leaving it blank.

Frequently asked questions
What should a Jain marriage biodata include?
The standard six sections — personal, education and career, family, contact and partner preference — plus a religious line: sect (Shwetambar or Digambar, and sub-tradition if your family considers it), community, gotra and diet. Add horoscope details only if your family matches kundalis.
Do Jain families match horoscopes?
Some do and many don't — it varies by family and community. If yours does, add time and place of birth and rashi; if not, leave the horoscope section out entirely rather than writing N/A.
How do I write Jain diet on a biodata?
One plain line: 'Jain — no onion, garlic or root vegetables', and add anything else your family observes, such as not eating after sunset. It is one of the first things the other family checks, so be exact.
What header goes at the top of a Jain biodata?
Many families write ॥ जय जिनेन्द्र ॥ or a line from the Navkar Mantra; others use no header. The free maker includes ॥ जय जिनेन्द्र ॥ as a header option.
